Pumpkins and Guy Fawkes Whilst We Wait...

Trying desperately not to let the impatience entirely take over and ruin what is my favourite time of year... For the most part it's not working. Most of the time I am being grumpy, impatient and all the while totally loosing my hypnobirthing inspired faith in my body.

However, times like last night are being toted up on a list of bonus enjoyments that would've otherwise been denied to us with a newborn. So with labour feeling literally decades away I circled town in a tour de Supermarkets the day after Halloween for something resembling fancy dress. Unsurprisingly pickings were slim and I just about scooped up these 9-12 month (good job my 19 month old is a dinky one) Halloween themed pyjamas. Teamed with her new "dox" hat, that she refuses to remove, we're ready to hit our friends' for joint Halloween and Guy Fawkes celebrations! (I remember from last year that a lot of readers have never heard of Guy Fawkes so peek here.) Spiced pumpkin soup, spider-web cupcakes, a few (toddler terrifying) fireworks and lots of friends with sympathetic faces for the bump... Wonderful!

Nerves are setting in. I'm questioning my body. I know it'll be worth it, I know it'll happen and I know we are so so lucky to have this "complaint" but living those beliefs is hard right now... Stay focused family A. We are so so close...

Guy Fawkes Night

If I look on my little map in blogger about the people who read me (thank you thank you thank you) I can see a large portion of you guys are across the pond in America and it occurred to me you might know nothing about a little "holiday" we call Guy Fawkes night?

So here's a very brief outline... At the beginning of the 17th Century a man called Guy Fawkes plotted to blow up the Houses of Parliament with gun powder. His plan was foiled and Fawkes was captured. He sat trial for treason, found guilty and was hung, drawn and quartered. It's a favourite part of British history taught at Primary School on account of the gory part where they chop him up (drawn and quartered). We have fireworks parties on (or around) Guy Fawkes Night to be reminded that blowing up the Houses of Parliament is generally a bad idea... A sound lesson I feel. We have sparklers, mulled wine, wooly hats, a bonfire, kids make "Guys"out of straw and old clothes, there's a big bonfire to burn the Guys and a fireworks display.

So here is baby girl's first Guy Fawkes Night...

Remember remember...
 The 5th of November...
 Gunpowder...
 Treason...
 And plot...

 I see...
 No good reason...
 Why gunpowder treason...
 Should ever...
 Be...
 Forgot.

Lessons:

1. These histories, traditions and occasions seem so much more important now we're a family.

2. It was good for me to take her out of routine for an evening. Routine is good but it's important to remind ourselves the sky won't collapse if we step out of it for a night.

3. I need a ton more practice with low light photography...
